Takaichi's victory over Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of a former prime minister, in a runoff vote has sparked both excitement and concern. While Koizumi, at 44, would have been the youngest prime minister in over a century, Takaichi, 64, brings a right-wing perspective to the LDP.
The upcoming parliamentary vote on October 15 will officially determine Japan's next prime minister. However, the limited participation in the LDP's internal voting process, involving only a fraction of the Japanese public, has raised questions about the representativeness of the decision.
Takaichi is expected to succeed Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, but the LDP's recent electoral setbacks have left it without a majority in either chamber. This means the new prime minister will need to forge alliances with opposition parties to govern effectively.
One potential coalition partner is the moderate centrist Komeito, but the LDP may also need to engage with more centrist opposition parties. This could prove challenging, as Takaichi's stance on immigration and her right-wing leanings may not align with the values of these parties.

The rise of the populist Sanseito party, which portrays immigration as a "silent invasion" and blames newcomers for societal issues, has further complicated the political landscape. Takaichi and Koizumi both attempted to appeal to voters concerned about immigration, with Takaichi stating, "Japan should reconsider policies that allow in people with completely different cultures and backgrounds."
Koizumi added, "Illegal employment of foreigners and the worsening of public safety are leading to anxiety among local residents." Such rhetoric is unusual in Japan, where the foreign-born population is only 3%.
On economic matters, Takaichi has advocated for aggressive monetary easing and large-scale fiscal spending, similar to her mentor, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. However, she has moderated her stance during the campaign.
Despite her traditionalist background within the LDP, Takaichi's election as the first female prime minister may not translate into a focus on women's rights or gender equality, according to Professor Yuki Tsuji of Tokai University.
Experts have expressed concerns about Koizumi's depth of knowledge and ability to maintain his popularity, despite his charismatic and modern image. Professor Sadafumi Kawato of the University of Tokyo questioned how long Koizumi's popularity would last, stating, "He's good at displaying how reform-minded he is, but he's not very good at debate."
Whichever candidate emerges victorious within the LDP will face an immediate diplomatic challenge: a potential summit with US President Donald Trump in late October. Trump may pressure Japan to increase its defense spending, adding another layer of complexity to the new prime minister's agenda.
As Japan prepares for this leadership transition, the country's future direction and the role of its first female prime minister remain uncertain, leaving many questions for the Japanese public and the international community.
