“ The Ideal 4-Seater For Summer ”

Before the current owner, it was owned since 2003 by the same keeper who had purchased it with approximately 53,000 miles covered. The Morgan is a 1600cc which uses Ford’s CVH 1600cc engine with Electronic fuel injection; this creates a more reliable and economical British classic.

Vehicle Story

Morgans are a reassuring constant in a world that is constantly changing, and not always for the better. That you can still go out and purchase a new car with resolutely 1930s styling is something to be rather happy about - especially as the technology beneath the vintage styling has kept pace with the passage of time. With a Morgan, you get the style and substance of a thoroughbred classic but with the reassurance of modern mechanicals. It’s an old car you can enjoy without ruining your appetite for… well, old cars.

The 4/4 was Morgan’s first four-wheeled vehicle, and model production goes all the way back to 1936 - barring a World War and a gap of a few years in the early fifties. A development of the three-wheeled F Super, it was originally powered by a 1.1-litre Coventry Climax engine outputting 40 bhp.

Since then, propulsion has come from a variety of Ford engines - aside from a brief flirtation with a Fiat twin-cam in the early eighties - with engine capacities getting progressively bigger and power output mostly increasing up to 125 bhp. The one you see here has the popular choice of the Ford 1600cc EFI engine.

From 2009, both output and swept volume inexplicably dropped, with the 1.6-litre Ford Sigma engine producing only 110 bhp. Ten years later, production of the 4/4 finally ceased with the introduction of stricter emissions regulations.

Despite the ever-changing underpinnings, and the Malvern firm now favouring BMW power, the pre-war looks have stayed the same - but Morgan enthusiasts wouldn’t have it any other way.

Vehicle Overview

Before the current owner, it was owned since 2003 by the same keeper who had purchased it with approximately 53,000 miles covered. The Morgan is a 1600cc which uses Ford’s CVH 1600cc engine with Electronic fuel injection; this creates a more reliable and economical British classic.

Having a quick look through the paperwork, the car looks to have been well maintained with plenty of invoices showing services and work carried out, which includes the most extensive recent service in 2021, approximately 900 miles ago. This leaves it ready for the next lucky custodian to take over the reins of the Morgan 4/4.

Exterior

Finished in solid black, the Morgan presents well, with a good depth to the paintwork. However, looking around the car, there are some signs of patina around the edges to show that it has been used as it should and enjoyed, rather than been tucked away and pampered.

Starting at the front, there are some stone chips, as you would expect to the front edges of the wings and around the grille. The grille is in good order, apart from one slat that has a slight bend at the top. The chrome bumper does have some rust marks and tarnishing, but it could be said it is in keeping with the age of the vehicle. The same can be said for the headlight surrounds. The light lenses are all in good condition with no splits or cracks. The bonnet looks to align nicely on both sides, which open and close as they should. Lastly, the windscreen and frame are in good order, with just a small amount of tarnishing to the frame.

Looking down the flanks, the classic Morgan shape is instantly recognisable; vents in the bonnet allow hot air to escape, and the flowing wings take up two-thirds of the vehicle for that classic look. We did notice some flakey paint around the bonnet vents. The doors look to align as they should and open and close like any Morgan. There are a few small chips here and there where the roof has been taken on and off over the years. The roof is generally in good order with just the odd light wear mark, and when in the up position, it sits nice and tight with no sagging. The doors have additional windows as part of the wet weather package, and these are in good condition with just some minimal marks to the perspex windows, as you would expect for the age. The chrome mirrors have some surface corrosion to the uprights but wouldn’t be a difficult item to replace if desired. The plastic rear window is nice and clear and has no discolouration or clouding, as often seen on plastic windows. Also included is a double duck tonneau cover and a matching hood cover.

At the rear, the light lenses are free from splits. A luggage rack is in good condition and, like the rest of the chrome, has a few areas where tarnishing has started. The wire wheels are painted silver and present well; the spare could do with a fresh coat of paint to freshen it up. The four wheels on the road have been fitted with matching Avon tyres which are like new in condition as they were only fitted in 2021.

Interior

How much leather do you like? Hopefully, it's a lot! The Morgan interior is finished with red leather to the front, and rear seats, door cards and transmission tunnel, and where isn't leather is red carpet or black leather and walnut for the dashboard.

The seats are in really good condition; there is the slightest amount of wear to the piping on the driver’s seat, where the seatbelt looks to have rubbed. The rear seat is in good order, with no apparent signs of any wear. There is some small amount of wear to the quarter panel edges where they meet the door, more than likely caused by people sliding against it when lowering themselves into the low-seated classic.

A lovely contrast to the red leather is the walnut dash fascia which is in good order. The four-spoke steering wheel is in nice condition, and the instruments behind it are working correctly but have a small amount of surface rust on the bezels. Further across, the other gauges check the engine's vital statistics. The switchgear has some signs of wear to the lettering on the buttons, which is in keeping with Morgan's mileage. Finally, further across and not to upset the look of the dashboard, a more modern-looking radio cassette is fitted inside the glove box.

Mechanical

The 1600 EFI engine has been a tried and tested unit for many years and has been developed even further with the addition of the electronic fuel injection system. Economical and with more performance, the 1600 CVH offers a nice amount of power for a vehicle weighing in at 760KG.

There are some signs of surface corrosion looking around the engine bay, but nothing a weekend's work couldn’t sort out for the enthusiastic DIY mechanic with a pot of paint.

The Morgan runs and drives as it should, with no untoward noises coming from either the engine or transmission. The car is reported to move through the gears as it should and stops in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

Looking at the underside of the car, there is some surface corrosion on the suspension components; this does look just to be on the surface and, again, possibly a job for the DIYer to tackle with a wire brush and pot of paint. Perhaps a nice project over the colder months, ready for the following summer?

History Highlights

There is a nice amount of history with the Morgan, the most recent being in September 2021 when it received a cam belt and water pump, new wheel bearings, the brakes fully rebuilt and a service. In 2010 the Morgan was given a freshen-up with a respray and some work to the bulkhead. This came in at the cost of £1980 and was carried out by Morgan agent Perranwell Garage, Cornwall, and the mileage at the time was 68,298, just 5,000 miles ago.

The car does have a current MOT.

What We Think

The 4/4 is a stunning looking car which has been around since the 50s, and really and truly hasn’t changed a great deal other than the improvements with the engine and transmission.

These mechanical improvements mean you can enjoy the classic look of a Morgan with the reliability of a modern-day car with fuel injection, although not so overly complicated that it would throw up an engine management light at the slightest hesitation.

Perfect for anyone who is looking for a spot of classic open-top motoring in a British Classic. We estimate this 1992 Morgan 4/4 to fetch between £20,000 - £24,000.
