1964 Morgan + 4 + Coupe For Sale (2024)

  • Thought to be 1 of only 9 RHD examples remaining
  • Only two registered keepers during the last 53 years
  • Re-sprayed to original 'Smoke Grey' in 2013
  • Last car to come to market sold in 2016 by RM Sotheby's

With well over a century of history behind them, Morgan are one of Britain's oldest car manufacturers still trading today. They also achieved something no other brand has, producing the only car to be displayed in Harrods' shop window. Based in the town of Malvern in Worcestershire, their designs have always encapsulated beauty coupled with unique engineering traits such as their use of Ash wood in constructing body frames.

In keeping with their uniqueness, the +4+ is a vehicle that broke the Morgan mould and somewhat split opinion upon its release in 1964. The use of fibre glass for the body wasn't welcomed with open arms by the Morgan purists. Boasting improved aerodynamic efficiency and drastically less weight, (at only 816 kg), the +4+ offered a top speed of 115 mph and looks quite unlike its siblings past or present. It was still constructed using a structural plywood floor, but in typical Morgan fashion, the +4+ also incorporated modern features like front disc brakes and the supremely capable Triumph TR4A engine. While many felt the ride was too hard, this gave for a sportier pedigree that was at home on a track,

In total only 26 examples were made compared to the 50 initially planned, meaning that today, the Morgan +4+ is an exceedingly rare vehicle to come by. This thought to be 1 of only 9 RHD examples remaining, and it's in fabulous condition.

The current owner has given this Morgan the best treatment possible. Regular servicing and maintenance as well as a full re-spray and full engine overhaul, this vehicle catches your eye from the offset and stays in your mind thereinafter.

Now comes the rare opportunity for this Morgan to find its next home. Will you be its next custodian?

Originally painted in Smoke Grey, a special colour from Morgan, this example had been resprayed to a lighter blue during a prior ownership. The current owner made the wise decision to revert the exterior back to Smoke Grey with a full re-spray in 2013 and at a cost of over £5,000.

Needless to say, the paintwork remains in mint condition overall with only a few very small chips visible when inspecting closely. The brightwork, badges and glass have all been meticulously looked after and come together to really catch your eye. The all fibre-glass body is free from any notable damage and the current owner has ensured its top condition has been maintained regardless of cost.

There is a small area of possible de-lamination around the windscreen surround but this would in no way affect driver visibility. The desirable boot mounted luggage rack is also in pristine condition, an optional extra which was configured when new.

While appearing somewhat compact from the outside, the interior of this plus 4 plus is surprisingly spacious for 2 occupants. The black vinyl seats remain in very good condition with a small area of padding showing on the drivers seat side bolster. The headlining is present, secure and remains in excellent condition, the white colour really helps to lighten the interior.

Both door cards are present, secure and remain in excellent condition. The black dashboard is also in excellent condition with the convenient addition of a period correct Smiths pocket watch, mounted via magnet. Furthermore, the original large steering wheel certainly invites you in with its polished metalwork and plastic rim, the latter of which does have some slight signs of wear. Black carpets are present throughout the vehicle and are in very good condition.

The boot holds a full-size wire spoke spare wheel, jack, spanner and mallet for the centre locking nuts. All of which are in very good condition, a special mention is deserved for the original Morgan red spare wheel cover, also included and in excellent condition.

  • Iconic 4-cylinder Triumph engine runs smoothly
  • Advanced for the time front disc brakes
  • Twin Zenith Stromberg carburettors

As with the rest of this Morgan, the current owner has had no expense spared in regards to maintenance mechanically. It has received regular servicing by Techniques, a Morgan specialist. As well as the service, new front brake callipers were fitted as well as the chassis being freshly painted.

It is clear from the paperwork that Techniques certainly know their way around Morgan's and are a wise match for this lovely plus 4 plus. They also carried out the full re-spray back in 2013 at a cost of over £5,000. A year prior in 2012, Techniques also carried out a full engine overhaul as well as being re-chromed and re-carpeted.

In 2019 this example received a new crankshaft and some engine work, of course, this was also carried out by Techniques and the vehicle has reportedly run well since. It is also evident from the paperwork that the chrome trim and bumpers have also never been forgotten, receiving regular treatment to ensure they retain their mirror polish. Both the engine bay and underside remain in excellent, clean and tidy condition.
