My Second Chevron Ever!

This is my second chevron blanket that I have ever made. I just love how they both turned out. If you would like to see my very first chevron blanket, you can find that here. It has a lovely country look and starts off with a peak. However, the blanket that I have done here starts off with a valley.

Ripple Blanket Free Crochet Pattern

When I crocheted my first chevron blanket, I referred to the Ultimate Guide to Chevron Crochet by Yarnspirations quite often for inspiration. Really a chevron and ripple blanket are like close cousins. The only difference is in how sharp your peaks and valleys are.

Both Chevron Patterns and Ripple Patterns have such a lovely look to them.

Just timeless beauty.

Soft Peaks and Valleys

The soft peaks and valleys in this chevron throw remind me of gentle ripples on the water in the moonlight. I was going for a gentle wavy effect and after playing around with the stitches for a bit, the look just came together.

To be honest, I had been crocheting another blanket for three weeks and was not really loving it. Same yarn! I ripped it out. Here is a photo of what I had been working on. I like the chevron pattern much better with this yarn combination. Hope you do too.

Basic Chevron Crochet Patterns

Generally, the chevron or zig zag look is achieved by increasing and decreasing stitches at regular intervals throughout a row of stitches.

Types of Stitches for a Chevron

The classic chevron crochet patterns often consist of a single crochet, half double crochet, or double crochet. As the crochet stitches get longer, the stitches in the chevron get taller.

Additionally, a beautiful ribbed look can be achieved by crocheting in just the back look. I have also seen a granny stitch cluster used in combination with a double crochet for another lovely variation. Today, this gentle river ripple blanket was made using the treble crochet stitch throughout.

Variations in Spacing

Along with the wide variety of crochet stitches that can be used for the chevron blanket. The spaces between the increase and decrease intervals gives a different look too. For instance, my first crochet chevron used single crochet and 13 stitches between the increases and decreases.

This pattern today has a soft flowing look to it because there are just 4 stitches between the increases and decreases. The size of this blanket can be changed by using multiples of 14, plus 4 for turning.

Creating the Crochet Chevron Pattern

I did use the crochet chevron pattern provided on the Yarnspirations website as a guide to creating this one. However, rather than double crochet, I used the treble crochet stitch throughout.

Additionally, rather than double crocheting 3 together, I did treble crochet 2 together twice in the valleys. It seemed to provide a bit more of a softer valley. Again, with the peak, the Yarnspirations pattern called for 3 DC, I used 2 treble crochet in two spaces at the peak. Again, it looked a bit softer.

Generous Blanket Size

This blanket is draped over the back of a sofa. Just the right size for snuggling under and staying warm. With handmade afghans, you can take your living space from blah to wow. This lovely ripple blanket pattern is just timeless.

Color Rows

The blanket color rows are repeated throughout.

  • 4 rows of Cape Cod Blue
  • 2 rows of White

This color pattern is repeated 6 times. To make this blanket symmetrical, I added four more rows of the Cape Cod Blue yarn to the end. Blanket is a total of 64 rows.
